Do you agree with the idea of lowering the drinking age?

Presidents of about 100 colleges and universities (including Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County) are calling on lawmakers to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18. They say current laws actually encourage binge drinking amongst college students.

Do you agree with the idea of lowering the drinking age?

Wait, so kids are abusing alchohol when its illegal to do so, so if we make it legal then abusing alchohol is not as bad. hmmmmm. I get it.

A parent's responsibility is to educate and train their children at home right from wrong. Rebellion is a natural stage all people go thru.  Dosen't make it right or acdeptable.  I did it.  "You" probably did too! If my son/daughter is old enough to fight for, defend and possibly die for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America, then they are old enough to have a drink!

What is this world coming to???  What morals and values are we teaching the young people of today???  Perhaps we should be raising the voting and driving ages to 21 as well as the enlistment age!  HMMM!!!   Now there's a real thought!

Re: Do you agree with the idea of lowering the drinking age?

Are you for real, and if so have you been drinking? Have you ever been to a morgue? Have you ever met a parent of a young teen whose body lays lifeless at the hospital where it was too late to revive him/her due to a night of binge drinking at an underage party where someone nice and of age bought alcohol for these kids. There has always been underage drinking and always will, but why promote the destruction of their brain cells earlier than the laws allow. Who do we hold accountable for the DUI's or DWI's not to mention the innocent lives that are lost from the accidents that result from the drinking. A law was passed years ago to protect our young and impressionable children, it is not a perfect law but it works for the most part ( the rest is up to the parents ) to teach our future generation to be responsible and respect the laws of our country, then some air head comes along and wants to change it because our children our drinking anyway. Put away your bottle and write again after you take a nap.

Should be 18.  You can vote and go to war and die for your country - why not drink?  Parents say you are not responsible enough - that would be their fault then for coddling you from life.  As far as going to the morgue - well that weeded out the dumb ones then.

I do not agree the drinking are should be lowered.  Nowadays kids think they are invincible and this will only prove their point.  The kids drive around sometimes like lunatics in their souped up cars rip roaring around so just think if they have alcohol in their system.

Re: Do you agree with the idea of lowering the drinking age?

In Arizona, prior to the country-wide change to 21, we had a drinking age of 19 which I was able to take advantage of. There were no increase in the abuse of alcohol as compared to those who were 21. Additionally, beer and harder alcohol were sold in supermarkets. This was back in the 70s when I lived there. Pennsylvania seems to be so far behind. While I do not condone lowering it to 18, I do support lowering it to 19, to ensure the great likelihood that the individual will be totally out of high school. As an exception, I do support allowing 18-year-olds to drink IF they are active duty military. As someone stated, if they are mature enough to join the military and make something of themselves and make the sacrifices the military entails, then they should be permitted to drink. IF they abuse it, they'll need to answer to their Commander.

Re: Do you agree with the idea of lowering the drinking age?

I believe the drinking age should be lowered and marjuana legalized but if we lower the drinking age to 18 then we will might have a million seniors in high school drinking and acting like fools. If you are in college no matter what year you should be able to drink and show responsibility.  The other concept is if can go fight for your country why can't you have a beer at the vfw or anywhere.
