A Unique Summer Concert:
Harrisburg Harp Orchestra Presents "Hot Summer Harps"

Now in it's fifth year, Harrisburg Harp Orchestra is celebrating summer with a one-of-a-kind variety show.

"Hot Summer Harps" features 30 harpists and guest musicians performing an unusual mix of classical, with a little rock and roll.  The concert will be held at the Forum in Harrisburg, Saturday, July 19, 15 7:30 pm.

The orchestra will perform all-original renditions of popular songs by Camp Hill composer Louis Lynch.  Dr. Timothy Dixon of Messiah College will conduct.

The harp orchestra will accompany vocal selections by Jane Ellen Varner of Columbia, Debbie White of Dillsburg and Andrea Cameron of Thompsontown.

The concert also will feature three guest ensembles.  The unique trio Harp Rock Cafe specializes in rock and pop songs arranged for harp, guitar and hand percussion.  Seasons, the talented Lee family of Harrisburg, performs with three harps, hammered dulcimer and other instruments.  Nayo, a four-piece African drum troupe, performs original percussion works.  And, Vicki's Tap Pups will liven the stage with dance.

Large harp ensembles are rare, and Harrisburg Harp Orchestra has grown to become one of the largest regularly performing orchestras in the United States.  Ranging from 26 to 47 strings, the harp is known for its rich, reverberant sounds and the unique full glissando that no other instrument can make.  In a standard orchestra or musical ensemble, the harp part stands out as dramatic and easily recognizable.  When multiple harps perform together, they produce a unique sound that no other ensemble of instruments can make.

Since 2004, the orchestra's annual Christmas concerts have sold out.  The orchestra has moved to the larger Forum auditorium by popular demand.  This year, the orchestra will present two major concerts: the July 19 show, and the Fifth Annual Harp-Felt Christmas, also at the Forum.

According to Lynch, "The Harp Orchestra is so different, and we're going all out for a musical show like nothing else you've ever heard.  Our concert mixes classical pieces and popular favorites with hits from the Beatles, Sonny and Cher, and Coldplay.  We're diving into something completely different, and very cool, for our first big summer show."

Tickets for the event are $20 for adult, $15 for seniors and students.  Order by mail from the Harrisburg Harp Orchestra, PO Box 700, Camp Hill, PA  17001-0700.

Tickets are available online at www.louislynch.com/hotsummer.htm.

Because previous concerts have sold out, advance ticket orders are recommended.
