To Cut or Not to Cut

....The Lawn.  Now that is the question!  When it gets to be this point in the summer and extended hot dry weather is the norm, I let the grass get long.  It's so the grass can survive as it drys out (or at least that's what I tell my wife...).

They tell you that the grass just goes dormant but I lost a lot of my lawn during the hot summer of '05.  So this year, I'm leaving it longer. I cut it last Thursday but when Saturday's heavy rain never materialized, I got "burned" by my own forecast!  It's been pretty dry ever since and now I'm getting a lot of brown (drying) areas.

Looks like most of this week will be dry so my lawn will take it on the chin despite my good intentions. At least I have a good excuse when my wife says I should cut the lawn!

That's a question I have always wanted to ask Dr. Noah Falk, the Plant Doctor.  I remember how dry it was last year. When it's so dry like that, my grass stops growing altogether. The only thing I still have when it is dry are the dandelion weeds. Those things still grow when it's so dry.  I remember last year that I had to mow those down because it looked so bad, even worse than the dry grass itself.  I'm like you though, I will wait until it gets longer.  With all the rain of late, I've actually had to keep cutting it.  I love to cut my grass.  I waited a good while to own my home and have the joy(that may sound weird, but I do enjoy it) of cutting my grass. When I cut my grass, the noise of the mower drowns out the world and I think and pray. It's great.  I am not fanatical about cutting my grass though.  I have a neighbor who is and I am not.

Wait 'til it's REALLY high, then cut the grass so it breaks/clogs your lawn mower, then you'll have an even better reason not to mow. ;-)

Incidentally, the guy who mows our yard doesn't cut it very short during the heatwave... so, tell your wife that it's not just an excuse.
