Lynch's Life

A Helpless Feeling

My wife and I were stopped at a red light the other day, and I happened to look over to the car in the lane to my right.  I quickly got a sick feeling in my stomach as I saw a girl maybe 3 or 4 years old standing-up in the back seat and bouncing around.  I could just see them getting into an accident and that precious child being thrown right out the front window.

My sick feeling quickly turned to anger at the mother that was driving the car, who, I might add, was nicely buckled-up in the front seat.

Granted, a soon-to-be father like myself might be have a different perspective on parenting, but this is just a safety issue!  Why was this child not in a car seat or a booster seat?  In fact, there wasnt even any car seat or booster seat visible - just amazing!

What was I to do?  Roll down the window and yell at the mother?  Obviously, she could care less about her child, let alone what I have to say about this safety situation.

As the light turned green and I turned left and they proceeded straight, I just said a little prayer for the safety of that child and that her mother will come to her senses and think of the dangerous consequences her ignorance might have.

I have a similiar story Paul.
I was a passenger in one of our news vehicles; on my way to a story.
We were at a red light, when I turned and saw a mother in the front passenger seat holding her child. NO SEAT BELT. IN THE FRONT SEAT!
Heaven forbid they got into an accident, they would all be in big trouble.
I just can't believe this happens. Don't people care enough about their kids to buckle them up?

Kids got to ride in the front seat in the old days, and the parents could choose for themselves whether or not the kids wore seat belts.  SOMEHOW most of us survived fine.  Why now is it suddenly such a terrible thing a kid rides like all kids got to ride 30 years ago?  I'm so tired of control freaks with nothing better to do than make up too many safety laws or complain about events such as where parents let their children ride in a car and in what kid of seat and belted in or not.  I miss the 1960's when people were free to think for themselves.

I'm not one for name calling or labels, but if having the best interest of a child at heart makes me a control freak, I will wear it as a badge of honor to be labeled as such. Numerous studies have been done validating that seat belts and child safety seats save lives. Unfortunately, in the past thirty years, many young children (and adults) had to die to validate the study. While I'm at it, I might as well take it a step further and voice that I think the optional helmet law for motorcyclists should be repealed as well.

So Password, while you are entitled to your opinion, I respectfully disagree. When it comes to the safety of a child, I think it should be a no-brainer for a person to do everything in their power to protect them.  And when the no-brainer mentality does not come easily to some, there needs to be laws to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

Password - Do you wear your seatbelt?  If you do, is it because you fear a ticket, or because you want to?  If not, is it because you are uncomfortable or you want to show a stance against the seatbelt laws?

If you are so against seatbelts, should we remove the airbags, ABS and anti-rollover technology from your car?  We've come a long way from the 1960's - and, with more cars on the road now than ever before, the risk of an accident is certainly higher than it was in the good ol' dayss.  What's wrong with embracing safety technology?

One other point, my father was a police officer for 20 years.  He told me something that has stuck with me for a long time.  He said, "Paul, I've never had to unbuckle the seatbelt off of a dead person."

Be safe!
