This event is open to the public.

Here's the information from the Hershey Bears' press release.

HERSHEY – The HERSHEY BEARS announced today in conjunction with the Dauphin County Commissioners that BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst and Washington Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau will be honored for their outstanding achievements in a ceremony Wednesday in downtown Harrisburg.

Yingst, a two-time winner of the James H. Hendy award as the American Hockey League's Executive of the Year, claimed another honor last week as he was named the Thomas Ebright award winner for outstanding service to the AHL. Entering his 27th year with the HERSHEY BEARS organization, Yingst has been general manager of the team for two Calder Cup championships, including the team's most recent triumph in 2006.

Boudreau, HERSHEY'S former head coach and a current resident of Dauphin County, was named the National Hockey League's 2007-08 Coach of the Year this past June. He was named head coach of the Washington Capitals on November 22, guiding the team to a 37-17-7 record and a Southeast Division championship.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Dauphin County Administration Building, next to the county courthouse. The event is free and open to the public. Both Yingst and Boudreau will be honored by the county commissioners for their contributions and achievements.

Dave Manzer Heart Fund

Former Messiah head coach Dave Manzer is in poor health and needs a heart transplant.

Manzer is in Milwaukee, WI, and is no longer able to accept a salary or health insurance because he works at a non-for-profit organization (IRS regulations don't allow non-profits to pay a salary or benefits to employees unable to work).

Charlie Fortney, director of Advanced Hoops, a local basketball training center, is accepting donations for the Manzer family at the Harrisburg Street Festival on Saturday, July 12. Charlie's booth is near the steps of the state capitol.

Here's more info on Dave's condition, courtesy of the Champions Academy website (www.championsacademy.org).

07/07/2008

Our great friend and coach, Dave Manzer, is in Milwaukee, WI, as a patient at St. Luke Hospital where he recently received an artificial heart and is connected to a 400 lbs battery. Due to heart failure after his "minor heart surgery" intended to repair his mitral value on December 17, 2007, Dave has gone through many issues including kidney failure and now is undergoing therapy and treatment in an attempt to strengthen his body enough to get him put on the list to receive a heart transplant. This has been an incredibly hard series of events for Dave and his family (wife Kathy and children--Andrea (20), Erica (16), and Aaron (5).

Meanwhile, donations may also be made out to Eagle Church with Dave Manzer Heart Fund written in the memo. Donations may be sent to:

However, everyone I've spoken to says he's a great guy.

Scott is now the first Lancaster Barnstormer to play in the major leagues. He was recalled by the Yankees on Sunday and pitched against the Twins later that day.

What impresses me the most about Scott?

He seems like just a regular guy. You could run into him at Home Depot...and never know he's a major leaguer.

Check out his website:

http://scottpattersonpitching.com/

No slick design or fancy intro. It's just there. But it's real...showing him with fans and friends throughout his stops in the indy and minor leagues. Fans can even submit pictures they took of Scott.

That's pretty cool. His site is like a scrapbook...one that we can all check out.

Piazza was a force at the plate and one of my favorite players. He set a major-league record for most home runs by a catcher and finished his career with a .308 average, 427 homers and 1,335 RBI. He played for the Dodgers, Florida Marlins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics; but wasn't currently playing this season.

The most amazing part of his story? He was a 62nd-round draft pick in 1988. The baseball draft doesn't even last that long now. Baseball lore says he was picked as a favor to Tommy Lasorda, who was a family friend. Lasorda confirmed that in an article by the Associated Press.

“No one drafted Michael,” Lasorda said last year. “Finally, I told our club, ‘I want him drafted.’ We sent five scouts to see him and they told the Dodgers they still didn’t want to draft him. We took him in the 62nd round. That meant there were 1,026 players drafted in front of him.”

Another website I found claims Piazza was the 1390th player chosen (due to supplemental selections), but I'm not going to bother counting. Of course, teams did choose some impact players that year: Tino Martinez, Robin Ventura, Gregg Olson, Charles Nagy, and Andy Benes. Piazza, however, is still the best.

But what I find most interesting?

The number of local players that were picked before Mike Piazza, a future Hall of Famer:

Craig Rapp, LHP, Red Land High School by the Reds in the 15th round;

Russell Smith, OF, Conestoga Valley High School by the Dodgers in the 18th round;

Brian Golden, RHP, Gettysburg College by the Cardinals in the 34th round;

Andrew Barrick, 2B, Elizabethtown College by the Phillies in the 41st round;

Billy Wissler, RHP, Central Dauphin High School by the Astros in the 42nd round.

Rapp didn't sign and went on to play at North Carolina State. He was chosen by the Braves in 1991 (35th round). TheBaseballCube.com lists no stats for Smith. Golden pitched three years in the Cards' chain. Barrick lasted one season while Wissler went to Penn and was picked by the Twins in the 11th round three years later.

None of the above local players ever appeared in a major league game. But at least they can say, 'I was drafted ahead of Mike Piazza!'

Paterno coming to Camp Hill in June

Forgot to mention this: Joe Paterno is coming to Camp Hill.
