It's funny how moving to a new state can make you understand what a big statement clothes can make. As a University of Michigan graduate, I have my fair share of Wolverine tee-shirts and sweatshirts. I've also got a few Detroit Tigers and Red Wings hats. I haven't worn any of these items without someone commenting on the fact that I am now in Penn State/Steelers/Ravens/Pirates/Flyers (and so on) territory. For the most part, I've simply gotten some good natured ribbing. Other people, namely a strangely intense man at the grocery store, have taken it a bit further. He told me I should stop wearing them, but that's not going to happen. What kind of fan gives up lifelong loyalty to a team simply because of distance? Penn State is a great school and I won't root against them (except when they are playing UM of course) but the devotion to local sports sure makes me glad I didn't move to Buckeye territory.
